Vitrectomy is a microsurgical procedure in which the vitreous gel is removed from the eye to allow repair of the retina. It is used for retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, vitreous hemorrhage, and advanced diabetic retinopathy.
Modern small-gauge surgery
Dr. Maisel uses the latest small-gauge, sutureless techniques, which reduce discomfort and shorten recovery time compared to older methods.
Recovery
Most vitrectomies are performed as outpatient procedures. Depending on your condition, a gas bubble may be placed in the eye and you may need to maintain a specific head position for several days. Vision improves gradually over weeks to months.
